Wind Energy in North Frisia – A Citizen-Driven Project with Tradition

Northern Germany – and especially North Frisia – is widely regarded as the birthplace of wind energy in Germany. Since the 1980s, capacity installed in the region has grown steadily and now totals approximately 2,500 megawatts (MW). Remarkably, about 90% of the wind farms in the area are citizen-owned projects in which residents have a direct stake.

Acceptance Through Participation

One of the pioneers in this field is Dirkshof having played a key role in shaping the region’s wind energy landscape. At its main site in Reußenköge, Dirkshof operates a total of 300 MW as part of a large-scale citizen-owned wind park.

By directly involving citizens in the process, these projects strengthen the community support and ensure long-term acceptance of renewable energy. For questions, ideas, or further information, Dirkshof is at your disposal as a reliable contact partner.
